Unique Window Treatments

Sunburst Arches and Window Blinds

Most homes have unique windows, whether they are ovals, octagons, triangles, etc. These windows provide personality and contrast to the home, but they also cause challenges to the décor. Sometimes it is challenging to know how to dress an oddly shaped window, but listed below are a few simple tips to consider.

  • Shades or Drapes – These are simple solutions to oddly shaped windows and have a wide variety of style and options to fit any décor of any room. They provide a wide range of options for the selective homeowner and are energy efficient. They do not necessarily need to be maneuvered by chords or poles, but can also be motorized to be moveable by the touch of a finger.
  • Blinds – These are wonderful options for tall, narrow or hard to reach windows. They come in vast varieties of materials and colors, and have several different styles as well. For those large windows or the out-of-reach windows, blinds can be motorized and with that simple touch of a button they will function to any taste or preference.
  • Shutters – These are the most versatile window treatments available on the market. Professional representatives arrive at the home to take measurements of any window to be able to form and accommodate any number of geometric shapes. In addition to its versatility, shutters are a modern and classy way to dress a window.

To summarize, any window can have a window treatment. What is necessary is to decide what treatment best fits the home and what style or design is wanted. Whether it is an octagon, a triangle or an arched window, it can be treated with a window covering.

Comfort and Diversity

Hardwood Stained Bathroom Shutter

Add Contrast and Comfort at a Great Affordability

As a shutter company we have always believed in the importance of custom interior shutters and the benefits that they give to the home. Shutters, unlike blinds, are usually made from hard materials, such as hardwoods like Knotty Alder and Basswood, composite woods or even vinyl. Typically, when someone hears the word “shutter”, they sometimes think of the exterior shutter that goes on the sides of windows. Those are beautiful and nice, but the most elegant type of shutter is what you put on the inside, which improves the quality of your home.

Interior shutters are more decorative in nature and they are used to minimize or completely block sunlight from entering the room. They are wonderful for keeping your neighbors from those sneak peaks into your house. Shutters preserve the life of your furniture, paintings and walls, keeping the damaging rays of the sun to a minimum. It is always nice to know that your investments are safe from damage and you save money in the long run.

As a custom shutter design company, we can create virtually any shutter for any window size or shape. Octagons, triangles, ovals, you name it and we have done it. With this type of diversity we can create a more contrasting style to the home as well as generate more comfort at a great affordability.

Add Elegance and Style to Your Bathroom

Window coverings can provide elegance and style to your bathroom

Having windows in a bathroom sometimes seems uncomfortable and causes one to feel a lack of privacy. It is important to maintain that level of privacy while also maintaining a certain level of style and elegance to the bathroom. This can be successfully approached through window coverings.

It is necessary to understand and choose the correct window covering. It all depends on what you are looking for; something more flowing and graceful like drapes or curtains, or something more mechanical and resourceful, like shutters or blinds. Any one of these window coverings will improve the overall taste and feel of your bathroom, it is just up to you to decide which one to go with.

Bathroom windows, when compared to windows throughout the rest of the house, should allow more privacy and protect your modesty. If choosing curtains or drapes to help maintain this level of privacy and modesty, try choosing a neutral-colored fabric that can help in softening the presence of windows inside your bathroom. It is also possible to use thin-louvered blinds or shutters in relation to the color scheme present on the walls.

Here at Stanfield Shutter Co., we believe that the best and most reliable window covering for a bathroom window is the Plantation Shutter. With the movable louvers and the supporting tilt-rod, you can give yourself privacy as well as allow sunlight and fresh air to come through the window.

Plantation shutters are also a good idea due to the durability and effectiveness that they have. They are easy to clean, they do not break (or tear) easily like blinds or drapes and they are easily accessible and user-friendly. Also, depending on the moisture exposed to the shutter, you can choose between wooden shutters or vinyl shutters. Vinyl shutters, though more expensive, can resist water damage that is frequent in bathroom settings. However, with whatever shutter that is installed in a bathroom, as long as they are kept dry, then water damage will be left to a minimum.

Window Treatment Tips

  • If using drapes, be sure not to clean the curtains in very hot water so that there is no risk of shrinking or fading them.

  • If using blinds it is important to be very careful not to get them wet. If exposed to water, be sure to dry them as soon as possible.

  • Plantation Shutters do need to be dusted and cleaned occasionally, so do not be too alarmed if they are exposed to water. Just be sure to dry them off and wipe them down.

Plantation Shutters; What a Home Owner Needs to Know

Plantation shutters, the name says it all.  Plantation Shutters were popular in the days of Southern plantations over a hundred and fifty years ago. Consider though that wooden shutters actually go back as far as to the time of the Romans. During the past few years wooden plantation shutters are making a comeback and are installed in many modern homes, office and apartments.

Plantation shutters can be made from natural hardwoods, engineered hardwoods (aka composite wood) or water proof vinyl materials. Many homeowners like the idea off an all natural hardwood shutter adorning there windows. These are more aesthetic in many ways, although they are more expensive. However, well made engineered hardwood plantation shutters can also be an aesthetic option and well as a less costly choice. In addition, engineered hardwood plantation shutters are “greener” and offer better insulation.  They are often more durable than their natural hardwood counterparts. Hardwood shutters will warp and get ruined in humid weather, or if they get wet.  Vinyl shutters, on the other hand, will hold up very well in a daily wet area such as a shower window or a kitchen window where the faucet may be very close to the window shutters. These shutters can be installed for any room of the house, the kitchen and bathroom included.

Plantation shutters give you several advantages over regular curtains/draperies.  While there are many less expensive curtains/draperies for sale at local “big box” designer stores or over the internet, most cheap curtains and draperies look put of place or out of style. Higher end more expensive curtains can be a more aesthetically pleasing look; unfortunately, even these will fade over time due to the harsh U-V rays of the sun. Plantation shutters, on the other hand, will function beautifully as compared to curtains/draperies for decades. Also consider it is less expensive to buy good quality plantation shutters than it is to buy good quality curtains/draperies.

It is also much easier to clean plantation shutters than it is to clean curtains or draperies. Curtains and draperies have to be taken down, washed, dried and then hung up again. This can be quite tedious, and most people have better things to do with their time. On the other hand, quality plantation shutters are very easy to maintain and clean. If the plantation shutters are made from genuine natural hardwood, then one should never clean them with a wet rag or cloth. Rather, it is better to use a vacuum soft brush attachment to clean and gently vacuum the shutters when desired.  It is also a good idea to avoid getting engineered hardwood plantation shutters overly wet, although these shutters can be wiped with a damp cloth as needed to remove small finger prints or dust and then dried immediately there after.

Plantation shutters also give you the homeowner greater privacy. In addition, Plantation shutters work great for a bedroom as they will block out most of the natural light, thus allowing one to sleep in as desire by control the light.  There are some room darkening curtains/draperies that do the same thing, such curtains/draperies are often very, very expensive.

Office/Study Shutters

When buying plantation shutters for your home, eowner may have shutters installed along with sheer curtains or draperies. The look with having plantation shutters along with sheer curtains can be nice. Having a thinner sheer curtain installed also can provide a homeownis a good choice to blend or match the shutters to your casings or interior doors.  Neutral color choices are a good idea as well; this will give you options for future design and color schemes.  If you have white shutters and you want to repaint your walls an off-white, then you can plan and blend the color to your desire.  On the other hand if you have purple shutters and want to change your wall color you may need to go to the extra cost and expense to repaint your shutters.

Plantation shutters are not only a simple clean look but also aesthetically pleasing to the room. Stanfield Shutter plantation shutters come in many styles and colors.  In some cases, a homeowner may have shutters installed along with sheer curtains or draperies. The look with having plantation shutters along with sheer curtains can be nice. Having a thinner sheer curtain installed also can provide a homeowner with the option of having some privacy without having to block out all natural light from coming through the window.

From traditional, modern to commercial Plantation shutters are a good option for almost any home owner. Stanfield Shutter company shutters come in many different colors and can be custom color matched to fit your personal tastes.  Many Shutter shapes and styles can be made from natural hardwood or engineered hardwood.  A home owner should choose a material, color and style of shutters that is right for their home. Plantation shutters will last for years as long as they are properly cared for and cleaned.  Over all, plantation shutters are a great investment! They are aesthetic, durable, practical and a great value for the money.

Shutters, invest wisely....

For Over 60 years Stanfield Shutter Company has provided elegant fashionable plantation shutters in homes along the Wasatch.  As the largest manufacturer of custom plantation shutters in the state of Utah we take pride in providing our customers with a reliable and affordable product. We uphold to a tradition of service, quality, reliability, reputation and customer satisfaction as the premier shutter company in Salt Lake City.  Shutters are considered fine window furniture for any home.  With our versatile line of custom interior shutters including the Savannah, Colonial, Georgian Lodge and Newport you can be assured Stanfield Shutter has a shutter to fit your window covering needs.  Our shutter lines are manufactured with many unique features that making each shutter a long lasting beautiful statement for any window configuration.

Savannah Shutters-

Our most economical & popular shutters for the past 20 + years Stanfield shutter has used Premium Engineered Hardwood.  Engineered Hardwood, specifically High Density Fiberboard (HDF), is scientifically designed with cross grained hardwood fibers, blended together with industrial strength resins. The cross grained wood fibers and the resins work together to offset the movement that occurs in natural woods. Natural wood expands and contracts in the direction of the grain; however, the cross fibers of the engineered woods stabilize one another, resulting in a product that is less susceptible to the effects of moisture and temperature change.

Colonial Shutters-

Beautifully smooth grain textured Basswood material.  Made of domestic wood cut in northern Michigan and Wisconsin, basswood is valued for its economy, soft workability, and finishing qualities. Because of its close, homogeneous grain structure, it is ideal for a wide variety of hobby, craft, and miniature projects.  Basswood can be stained or painted to represent any wood type. Shutters turn out very well when basswood is used.

Georgian Lodge Shutters-
Made from Northwest Knotty alder which has a comparable durable strength of maple and the traditional appeal of pine. The wood is light brown in color with yellow and peach hues. Stains or glazes can further highlight the beautiful grain. The open, solid knots give alder a more rustic finish personality.  If you need a traditional rugged look without the high price of more expensive hardwoods our Georgian Lodge knotty alder shutters are the way to go.

Newport Shutters-

Stanfield Shutter uses only solid vinyl synthetic shutter components. This is important because other products such a vinyl wrapped or hollow vinyl shutters deteriorate rapidly and do not hold up as well as solid vinyl products. While our high grade vinyl synthetic shutters are more expensive then other more common materials it does have the advantage of being waterproof. Therefore if you are putting a shutter above a kitchen sink or in a shower stall vinyl is a better way to go to avoid water related damage.

Knotty Alder Shutters

Our Georgian Lodge shutters are made with premium Knotty Alder hardwood. In recent years Knotty Alder has surged in popularity in the building industry. Craftsmen now use Knotty Alder to make furniture, kitchen cabinets, shutters, and mouldings. The Georgian Lodge shutters are typically stained because of the nice grain structure and the rustic knots that give Knotty Alder its character. It is due to this unique and beautiful grain structure, as well as the availability and relative inexpensiveness (when compared to other hardwoods) of Knotty Alder, that it has steadily grown to become the most popular hardwood used in stained applications.

Knotty Alder’s natural grain color can vary from the light to the medium brownish-red. We recommend choosing a stain color that is as dark or darker then the natural color of Knotty Alder. If your décor requires a light stain you might consider our Colonial shutters built with Basswood which has a lighter grain. Our representatives can help you determine the perfect stain for your shutters that fits your style and décor. Because the natural grain structure of Knotty Alder can vary from light to medium to dark most of our customers choose to use a 4 ½” louver which allows them a wider blade that will show off more of the grain structure and characteristics of the wood then the smaller blades do. Knotty Alder is also more on the contemporary side of the decorating scale which lends itself more to the 4 ½” louver.

Our Georgian Lodge shutter is a great choice and with builders frequently using Knotty Alder in home construction it seems natural to have the shutters built with the same species in order to preserve the uniform look and feel of your home. No matter what the application the Georgian Lodge is a fine choice.

Because stain grade shutters allow the natural grain of the wood to show through the finish it is important to choose a hardwood that best matches the grain patterns of the wood in your home. The Georgian Lodge shutter made with Knotty Alder has a more rustic, knotty grain which is closer to the contemporary, new age, and western decorating styles.

The characteristic knots which define the Georgian Lodge shutter can be clearly seen in these pictures. The natural grains and the accenting knots make wonderful additions to any décor.

Innovative Design

In the early 1980’s the president of Stanfield Shutter Company, Gary Stillman, could not have imagined the impact a family vacation to Nauvoo, IL would have on his life, his company, and the entire shutter industry.

Nauvoo is full of charming little specialty shops in which individuals instruct tourists about life in the 1800’s. Each shop is dedicated to a different task. There’s one for brick-making, another for printing on an old printing press, and still another for metal and ironwork. As Gary watched the many craftsman demonstrate how our ancestors lived and worked he was impressed with the innovation and dedication they possessed.
In one particular shop a man demonstrated how our ancestors built wagon wheels. The craftsman showed the visitors how the wooden spokes were connected to the center hub and secured to the circular perimeter of the wheel to keep the wheel round. As Gary watched he had the idea to incorporate the "spoke" concept into a new shutter design to accommodate the new arch shaped windows that were just becoming popular.

Upon returning to Utah Gary enlisted Stanfield Shutter’s finest engineer and designer, Grant Petersen, to help him develop the moveable louvered sunburst arch. They incorporated the spoke concept by joining the louvers to the shutter frame hub. In doing this they engineered the louvers to rotate open and closed. Over time the team made improvements and eventually added a tilt rod to the circle and ½ circle arches so all the louvers could be adjusted at once. Today every sunburst arch design in the world traces its heritage back to the innovation Gary and Grant had more than 20 years ago.
